Adelphi

Sampling whisky from a single oak cask
Sampling whisky from a single oak cask

Type: Independent bottler

A Glasgow distillery making grain and malt whisky for blenders, an Edinburgh bottler with a staff of two, and a west Highland distillery established in 2014: Adelphi connects three distinct whisky stories.[1][4][5] The name links them, but each belongs to a different chapter.

Today, Adelphi is an independent whisky bottler with a distilling arm at Ardnamurchan. Its name comes from a distillery in Glasgow’s Gorbals; its modern bottling business began with Jamie Walker’s revival in 1993. Ardnamurchan is a newer chapter, not the old Glasgow distillery transplanted to the Highlands.[1][4]

What Adelphi is known for

Single casks are at the heart of Adelphi’s revived identity, bottled at cask strength without chill filtration or added colour.[1][4] Scotch Whisky describes a selection of about 50 casks a year. That is a reported scale of activity, rather than a verified production total for November 2026.[1]

Around 2000, Adelphi was selecting casks between five and 32 years old, with individual casks yielding 200 to 600 bottles.[4] Those figures describe the business then, not specifications for every later release. Selecting single casks, rather than producing grain and malt whisky for blenders, distinguished the revived bottler from its Glasgow namesake.

Adelphi also gives a clear answer to a common question about independent bottlers: a company can select whisky from other producers and make whisky of its own.[1][4][5]

The context tells you which Adelphi you are reading about. A nineteenth-century reference belongs to the Glasgow operation. A modern Adelphi bottling belongs to the revived business. Ardnamurchan identifies the distillery established on the west coast in 2014.[1][4][5]

The Glasgow distillery behind the name

Before Adelphi meant selected single casks, it meant a working distillery in Glasgow’s Gorbals. Its precise beginnings remain disputed: Scotch Whisky dates the founding to 1825 and names brothers Charles and David Gray; Whisky Magazine dates the start of trading in Adelphi Street to 1826 and gives a different account of the early Walker connection.[1][4]

The later story is clearer. The distillery began using Loch Katrine water in the 1860s and became Loch Katrine Adelphi in 1870. Scotch Whisky places its transfer to A. Walker & Co about a decade later.[1]

Whisky Magazine describes a substantial operation in the 1880s, with its own blending and bottling plants. It made grain and malt whisky, mostly for blenders, and sold an own-label grain whisky too.[4] This was a broader production business than the single-cask selection that would define the revived Adelphi.

Revival as an independent bottler

Jamie Walker was 24 when he acquired the Adelphi name from a London wine company, according to Whisky Magazine. The great-grandson of Archibald Walker revived it in 1993, establishing an Edinburgh operation with a staff of two.[4]

The corporate record traces the business from a slightly earlier starting point. Adelphi Distillery Limited was incorporated on 18 December 1992 as Pacific Shelf 512 Limited and retained that name until 3 March 1993. James Maclachlan Orr Walker served as a director from 18 January 1993 to 1 June 2004.[2][3]

Whisky writer Charles MacLean joined the board on 18 May 1993 and remained a director until 1 June 2004. Whisky Magazine disclosed that he was also its editor-at-large and that he took no part in its Adelphi profile.[3][4] Readers should keep that declared connection in view when using the article as evidence about the company.

The selection reached beyond Scotch. The same profile records Shannon 1991, a single Irish grain whiskey, alongside two Irish single malts, all distilled at Cooley in Dundalk. It also records the return of the Limerick Distillery label.[4]

Those Irish releases neatly separate the name on the bottling from the source of the spirit. Adelphi selected and bottled them; Cooley was the disclosed distillery.[4] It is a useful distinction when reading the history of a bottler whose own name began at another distillery entirely.

The 2004 change and Ardnamurchan

Scotch Whisky records Jamie Walker’s sale of Adelphi to Keith Falconer and Donald Houston in 2004. Companies House records James Keith Ross Falconer and Donald Francis Irwin-Houston becoming directors on 1 June that year.[1][3] The sale account and the appointments describe related events, but do not establish the sale’s precise completion date.

Alexander Victor Bruce has been a director since 1 September 2004. The officer record, checked in November 2026, also shows Irwin-Houston’s departure on 18 March 2015, Keith Falconer’s departure on 17 May 2022 and James Hector Reid Falconer’s appointment on 7 February 2023.[3]

Ardnamurchan was established in 2014, giving Adelphi a distillery of its own on the Ardnamurchan peninsula in Scotland’s west Highlands.[5] Scotch Whisky identifies Houston as laird of the Ardnamurchan Estate and says the distillery was built on his land.[1]

Production and business timeline

Date Verified milestone
1870 Glasgow distillery renamed Loch Katrine Adelphi.[1]
1902 DCL bought Adelphi.[1][4]
1907 Production stopped at the original distillery.[4]
1993 Jamie Walker revived the Adelphi name.[1][4]
2004 Scotch Whisky records the sale to Falconer and Houston.[1]
2014 Ardnamurchan was established.[5]

This history moves through closure, revival and new construction. It is not a continuous run of whisky production: the Glasgow distillery and Ardnamurchan are separate sites within the wider Adelphi story.[1][4][5]

What Ardnamurchan adds

Ardnamurchan brings whisky production into Adelphi’s modern business. The producer describes traditional double distillation alongside blockchain traceability.[5]

Its published process includes unpeated malt and peated malt measured at 30 parts per million phenols. It also describes some heavily peated malt measured at 80 parts per million, whose spirit was still maturing in the producer’s account.[5] These are measurements of the malt, not phenol levels in the bottled whisky.

The cask account is equally varied. The producer lists American and European oak, including casks previously used for bourbon and sherry, as well as casks that held white wine, mezcal, Sauternes or Madeira.[5] This is the distillery’s published cask account, not a statement that every release uses all these cask types.

Named expressions include AD/ Single Malt, AD/ Cask Strength Release, AD/ Single Cask and AD/ Sherry Cask Release. The producer also lists Maclean’s Nose, a blended Scotch it describes as having a west coast character.[5]

Fascadale adds another strand. Scotch Whisky describes it as the name for small-batch bottlings from unspecified island distilleries. It also reports plans for some Ardnamurchan spirit to enter Fascadale and other house bottlings, with some intended for reciprocal trading.[1] Those are reported plans; the contents of a particular bottle need to be identified separately.

Three common misunderstandings

  • Adelphi is not an old distillery on Ardnamurchan. The original stood in Glasgow’s Gorbals; Ardnamurchan was established in 2014.[1][5]
  • The name does not establish continuous bottling since the 1820s. Jamie Walker revived Adelphi in 1993, after production at the original distillery ended in 1907.[4]
  • An independent bottler can also distil. Adelphi’s independent bottling activity and its connection to Ardnamurchan are both documented parts of the business.[1]
