whiskydistillery.co.uk is an independent reference website for adults of legal drinking age. We research whisky from grain to glass, separating documented facts from company accounts, opinion and tradition. This policy explains how we check information, describe whisky and correct mistakes.

How we research and describe whisky

We start with the reader's question and use sources suited to the claim. Legal explanations rely on official legislation and specifications. Science and history draw on research and original records where available. Industry standards are distinguished from law, and an industry body is never presented as a regulator.

Sources accompany material claims so readers can trace the evidence. We identify the jurisdiction, date, units and exceptions needed to understand a rule or figure. A company is a source for its own statements, not an independent judge of quality or historical priority.

Our descriptions distinguish published tasting notes from observations made for the site. Brand notes are attributed to the brand. Any tasting or recipe described as our own must have a recorded method. We do not invent visits, samples, quotations, awards or test results.

Stories receive the same scrutiny as technical claims. We keep documented history separate from later traditions and legends. Where evidence cannot establish a claim, we leave it out or explain what remains unknown.

How we verify distilleries and owners

A distillery, a brand, a bottler and an owner are different entities. We maintain shared fact records so articles, directories and tools use the same verified names, dates and relationships. Whisky's origin is not inferred from a brand's address or marketing.

Ownership checks use company filings, official notices and dated company statements. We distinguish an announced transaction from a completed one, and identify the legal owner and ultimate parent where established. Conflicting evidence is referred to the editor rather than resolved by assumption.

Business status, distilling activity, visitor access and the condition of a site are checked separately. We record when changing facts were verified. Ownership, status and visitor information are reviewed at least every six months, law and statistics at least annually, and sooner when sources change.

Editorial independence and review

We do not sell whisky, quote prices, value bottles or casks, or rank them by price. Any commercial relationship relevant to a page must be disclosed and must not determine its coverage. Alcohol is never presented as having health benefits.

Every published piece must have a named author or editor. Legal, health, safety, ownership and technical production pieces also require a named reviewer with relevant, disclosed competence. Automated assistance does not replace expert review or human publication approval.

Images and transparency

We use real photographs for named distilleries, people, bottles and other identifiable subjects, with permission or licensing recorded. Generated illustrations are identified as such and are not presented as documentary photographs. We never use a generated image as evidence of a visit, product or event.

Corrections log

If you find an error, send the page title, the disputed statement and supporting evidence to the editorial contact below. The editor checks the report against appropriate sources and updates affected shared records and pages.

Substantive corrections carry a visible date. Each log entry will identify the affected page, the correction, what changed and when. Routine spelling and formatting fixes do not require a substantive correction notice.

Correction entries will be published here as they arise. A page's last checked date records its review, not a guarantee that circumstances cannot subsequently change.
