Photograph Credits and Image Licences

Images on whiskydistillery.co.uk must be credited according to their source and the permission or licence covering their use. Real photographs and generated editorial illustrations are treated differently: a generated image is never presented as a documentary photograph.

Real photographs

Real photographs are required for named distilleries, buildings, stills and warehouses; bottles, labels and packaging; brands and branded accessories; named people, places, events and festivals; and technical or safety critical procedures. These images must be licensed, supplied with permission or taken by the site.

An image credit must identify the photograph clearly enough to connect it to the page and image concerned. A general acknowledgement does not replace the record for an individual photograph.

What each credit records

For each real photograph, the credit record must contain:

• The page title and the image or caption it relates to.
• The photographer’s name and any separately identified rights holder.
• The source of the photograph, including a source link where supplied.
• The named licence and its version, or the permission covering publication.
• Any required attribution wording and a record of relevant image alterations.

Permission records belong in the editorial record even when they cannot be reproduced publicly. Before publication, the editor must check image rights, attribution requirements and any relevant trademark use; missing information must not be replaced with an assumed licence.

Generated editorial illustrations

Generated images are permitted only as general or conceptual editorial illustrations. They must be recorded as generated and must not show or imitate a real brand, recognisable bottle, label, named distillery, named place, person, historic event or award.

An illustration must not be used as evidence of a visit, tasting, product appearance or historical scene. Where whisky appears, its colour must not be used to suggest age or quality; the accompanying description must describe the illustration, not claim that it depicts a specific product.

Reusing an image

A credit on this website is an acknowledgement, not an offer of permission to reuse the image. Check the licence recorded for that particular photograph and seek permission from the identified rights holder where needed; do not assume that different images share the same terms.

Credit corrections and rights enquiries

If you believe an image has an incorrect credit or has been used without the necessary permission, please identify the page, the image and the correction or rights issue. Include a source or supporting record where available so that the editor can assess the specific image.
