Distillery Production Data Compared (stills, washbacks, capacity, peating)
Distillery production data compared side by side can show differences in equipment, installed capacity and the basis of a peating measurement. This page is designed to compare those recorded facts, not to rank whisky quality or suggest that a larger distillery makes better whisky.
[TOOL TO BUILD]
How to use the comparison
Choose the distilleries you want to compare, then select the fields relevant to your question. Read the source date and measurement basis alongside each value, rather than treating every number as directly comparable.
The tool should keep the distillery name visible with every result. A blank field must not mean zero, and a missing equipment detail must not be converted into an assumed production method.
What the fields will show
- Stills: number and type, with wash stills and spirit stills shown separately where the verified record distinguishes them. Pot, column and hybrid equipment must retain their recorded descriptions.
- Washbacks: number and material, using the terminology in the verified record. The comparison must not infer fermentation time, vessel size or working volume from the number of vessels.
- Capacity: installed capacity in litres of pure alcohol a year, explicitly labelled as installed capacity, not actual output. Any separately documented output figure needs its own basis and reporting period.
- Peating: the reported level in parts per million, identifying whether the measurement concerns malted barley or spirit and who reported it. The tool must not compare those two measurement bases as equivalent.
Sources and matching rules
Each displayed value must come from the site's verified distillery fact sheets, with its numbered source reference and date checked. The comparison should use the same records as the individual distillery pages, rather than maintain a separate set of figures.
Only fields with matching units and measurement bases should be compared numerically. A source describing installed capacity must not populate an actual output field; a peating figure without an identified measurement basis must not enter a numerical comparison.
Missing data and limits
Use “unknown” where the verified record has no value and “not verified” where a proposed value has not been confirmed. Neither label should become a yes or no answer, an estimated figure or a position in a ranking.
This is an equipment and production data comparison, not a flavour prediction. Results should provide no quality score, recommended drinking quantity or claim that one equipment configuration is better than another.
Before relying on a result, check its source date and whether the recorded figure answers your question. Differences in the completeness of published records should remain visible, rather than being hidden by an apparently complete table.
