Whisky Expression Database (Phase 2: name, ABV, age, cask, batch, release year, label evidence; no prices)

The Whisky Expression Database is a planned reference tool for identifying individual whisky releases through their names, stated strengths, ages, casks, batches and release years. It is designed to show the evidence behind each entry, rather than treat a product name as a complete identification.

What the Whisky Expression Database will cover

An entry will describe a particular expression or identifiable release, not simply a brand. Where the evidence distinguishes batches or releases, those differences will be recorded separately rather than folded into one description.

The database will not include prices, valuations, rankings or recommendations to buy. Its purpose is to help readers compare documented information and recognise which details belong to the bottle or release they are researching.

How to use it

Start with the expression name, then narrow the results using any details you can read on the bottle: ABV, an age statement, a cask reference, a batch identifier or a release year. A missing detail should remain blank in your search, not be replaced with a guess.

Open a matching record and compare its evidence with your bottle. If several records match, use the distinguishing fields rather than assuming that the first result is the right one.

Fields and evidence

Each record will have the following fields, populated only where supporting evidence is available:

Name: the expression name as documented, with the release identifier where supported. ABV: alcohol by volume, recorded as a percentage.

Age: the stated age, or a record that complete label evidence shows no age statement. If the label evidence is incomplete, the field will remain not verified. Cask: the documented cask description or identifier, without filling in undisclosed details.

Batch: the batch reference exactly as documented. Release year: the year supported by release evidence, kept separate from other dates. Label evidence: the source image or document, its provenance and the date checked.

Matching rules and unknown information

Search will compare entered details with the corresponding recorded fields. A confirmed match will require each supplied detail to agree with verified evidence. A conflicting detail will rule out a confirmed match, while a missing or unverified field will leave the match unconfirmed.

An empty field will display “unknown” or “not verified”, as appropriate. Missing evidence will never become a yes or no answer, and an unverified age field will not be treated as proof that a release has no age statement.

Sources and limits

No expression records or label evidence have been supplied for this page. This is a description of the intended tool, not a searchable database or a claim that any release has been verified.

Before publication of records, each material field must be traceable to the site's verified expression record and its permitted sources. Label evidence can support identification, but this database will not authenticate an individual bottle.

Sources

This page was prepared from the supplied P28 editorial brief as a tool specification; no external sources or expression records were supplied or used.
