Whisky explained, from grain to glass

About Us

whiskydistillery.co.uk is an independent reference website about whisky and whiskey, from the grain to the glass and the people and businesses behind each bottle. Our purpose is to make the subject clear, useful and trustworthy, whether you are learning the basics or checking a technical detail.[2]

A reference work, not a shop

We cover how whisky is made, what labels mean, how styles differ and how distilleries, brands, independent bottlers and owners connect. History, law, tasting, serving and collecting belong here too, with each subject given the depth it needs.[2]

We do not sell whisky, quote prices, value bottles or casks, or rank products by price. The aim is to help readers understand what they are looking at, not to steer them towards a purchase.[2]

Written for different levels of knowledge

A beginner should be able to find a plain answer without first learning the vocabulary. An enthusiast or professional should be able to follow the evidence behind a definition, production figure or ownership claim. We explain unfamiliar terms where they matter and keep technical detail close to the question it answers.[2]

The website is for readers worldwide. Where a rule depends on a country or market, we identify that jurisdiction rather than treating one country's definition as universal. We respect whisky traditions on their own terms, including the different conventions behind “whisky” and “whiskey”.[2]

How we approach the evidence

We distinguish legal requirements, industry standards, company statements and independent research. A producer's account of its history or flavour is identified as that producer's account. A traditional story is not presented as established history simply because it has often been repeated.[2]

Changing facts need particular care. Ownership, distilling activity and visitor access are separate questions, and an announcement is not the same as a completed event. Where the evidence does not establish an answer, we say so rather than fill the gap with an assumption.[2]

Our editorial rules require sources for material claims and a last checked date. First-hand tasting, visits and recipe testing are described as ours only when there is a record of who carried them out and how. Generated illustrations must not be presented as documentary photographs.[2]

Editorial responsibility

A named human editor has final authority over publication. Articles involving law, health, safety, ownership or technical production also require a named reviewer with relevant, disclosed competence. AI assistance does not replace expert review or human publication approval.[2]

Responsible editor: [EDITOR TO ADD].

This website is intended only for adults of legal drinking age. We do not encourage drinking more or present alcohol as a health benefit, a solution to problems or something compatible with driving. Practical tasting and serving coverage follows the same responsible approach.[2]
