Ardgowan

An old estate sawmill site near Inverkip is now home to a new distillery. Ardgowan officially opened on 20 June 2025 on the Ardgowan Estate, west of Glasgow; its 2021 first-phase plan had specified two copper stills.[1][2][5] Its own single malt is still maturing. The Clydebuilt whiskies associated with the company come from its independent bottling business, not from Ardgowan’s stills.[3]

What Ardgowan is known for

An estate sawmill site, sherry casks and energy recovery define Ardgowan’s story. The producer describes it as Inverclyde’s first new distillery for more than a century, built where the estate’s old sawmill once stood.[1][5] Its plans bring together maturation mainly in European oak sherry casks and systems designed to recover heat and reuse steam.[3][8]

The distinction to remember on a bottle is simple: Ardgowan’s own single malt is maturing, while Clydebuilt is whisky selected from elsewhere.[3] The distillery and the independent bottling range are separate activities. Neither the company name nor the bottler’s address establishes where a particular whisky was distilled.

Nearby, a Clyde distillery and a Glasgow distillery offer useful comparisons. Ardgowan’s particular appeal is the chance to follow a producer from its building plans and first casks towards the eventual release of its own whisky.

Ardgowan’s estate history reaches much further back than its whisky business. About 30 miles west of Glasgow, the estate was identified in project reports as belonging to Sir Ludovic Shaw-Stewart, 12th Baronet, whose family had been at Ardgowan for more than 600 years.[2][6] That long association supplies the setting; the distillery company is a modern undertaking.

The plans approved by Inverclyde Council in March 2017 targeted an opening in 2019. The proposal included a microbrewery and a gin still alongside the whisky distillery.[4][5] These were elements of the proposed scheme, rather than a record of every activity that subsequently began.

By 2021, production was expected in 2023. Reports named Martin McAdam, Alan Baker and Roland Grain as founders, with Grain, an Austrian investor, becoming the cornerstone investor.[2][7] The successive dates chart a project taking shape, not a series of openings.

Completion came in June 2025, according to the producer, which names 20 June as Official Opening Day. Verdict: Documented. It describes the development journey as lasting eight years.[1] After the earlier targets, this date marks the opening of the completed distillery.

Development and production timeline

Date Recorded event
March 2017 Inverclyde Council approved the project, then targeting a 2019 opening.[4][5]
2021 Roland Grain became cornerstone investor; production was expected in 2023.[2][7]
November 2024 Laura Davies joined after more than 12 years at The Welsh Whisky Company.[9]
June 2025 Building concluded, according to the producer.[1]
20 June 2025 Official Opening Day.[1][3]
Summer 2026 Annual peated production run added, according to the producer.[3]

Verdict: Disputed. The first cask has a separate, conflicting chronology. The producer’s FAQ gives 17 June 2025, while its release dated 23 June 2025 announces the filling “today”.[1][3] Those accounts leave the precise first cask date unresolved.

The people behind the project

Whisky, brewing and engineering experience shaped Ardgowan’s early team. Contemporary reports named Martin McAdam as chief executive and Willie Phillips, formerly managing director of The Macallan, as chairman.[4][5] These were their roles during the project’s development, not a current board listing.

Gordon Wright, formerly Bruichladdich’s marketing director, advised on commercial development. Engineering design advice came from Michael Egan, whose experience included overseeing brewing redevelopment at Guinness.[4] Together, their contributions covered both the production operation and the business being built around it.

The producer now describes Ardgowan as led by Roland Grain and distillery manager Laura Davies.[1] Davies has made whisky since 2012 and trained under Dr Jim Swan in the Welsh whisky industry, according to the company.[3] She arrived in November 2024, before construction finished and the distillery officially opened, bringing more than 12 years’ experience at The Welsh Whisky Company.[9]

The building and its production design

A steeply pitched roof gives Ardgowan’s steel-framed building a church-like appearance, according to the published construction account. Muir Construction was the main contractor, and Hescott Engineering erected the steel frame.[8] The distinctive profile belongs to a purpose-built modern distillery.

The 2021 first-phase plan called for two copper stills and six washbacks, with planned capacity of one million litres a year; the measurement basis for that figure is not reliably established. The same 2021 plan described an approved second phase that could double output through additional stills and washbacks.[2]

The construction account records a five-tonne mash tun, alongside heat recovery, carbon dioxide capture and a closed-loop cooling tower intended to avoid discharge into the Kip River.[8] The producer also describes Thermal Vapour Recompression, a system used to reuse steam.[3]

These capacity figures describe the planned scale, while the construction account and producer statements document the design. Actual annual spirit production, independently measured environmental results and quantified savings remain unverified. The accounts describe a distillery designed around resource recovery, with provision for expansion.

The whisky Ardgowan intends to make

Full-bodied, clean and fruity is the character Ardgowan is pursuing, with maturation mainly in European oak sherry casks.[3] This is the producer’s description of its developing whisky, rather than a tasting note for a released distillery single malt.

The producer describes production as mainly unpeated and reports adding an annual peated run in summer 2026.[3] That adds another strand to the developing stock, while the character, age and composition of future releases remain open.

Verdict: Documented. The original ambition was “a truly outstanding seven-year-old lowland single malt”.[4] It is a statement of the early goal, rather than an announcement of the first bottling or its age. The company also uses “Home of the Infinity Cask” in its communications.[11]

Clydebuilt is not Ardgowan-distilled whisky

Clydebuilt offers a way to explore the company’s whisky selection while Ardgowan’s own spirit matures. The producer identifies it as an independent bottling range selected by Laura Davies, explicitly separate from the distillery’s developing single malt.[3]

The record names Clydebuilt Anchorsmith. Producer communications also cover Sherry Cask Matured and 100 Proof, both Speyside single malts, and Candlebrae, a Highland malt aged for a decade in American oak.[10][11] Those stated origins and maturation details belong to the individual bottlings. They are not descriptions of mature whisky distilled at Ardgowan.

Start with the named whisky and its stated origin when reading a label. Clydebuilt represents selection from elsewhere, while Ardgowan’s own single malt continues to mature, a distinction the company makes explicitly in its FAQ.[3]

The earlier Ardgowan name

Story box: A Greenock name, a new Inverkip distillery

Field Record
Founding story The original Ardgowan Distillery was founded in 1896 in Baker Street, Greenock, according to the local historical account.[6]
Turning point Destroyed in the May Blitz of 1941.[5][6]
Documented record Made whisky for a few years, then grain spirit and industrial alcohol.[6]
Claim and source mapping Founding location and production sequence: Inverclyde Now. Destruction also recorded by The Drinks Business.
Last checked 7 November 2026

Verdict: Documented. Ardgowan was a distillery name in Greenock long before the present Inverkip project. The earlier distillery made whisky for a few years, then grain spirit and industrial alcohol.[6] It was destroyed in 1941.[5][6]

There is no established record of uninterrupted production linking that Greenock business to the new Inverkip site. The earliest historical source underlying the published accounts is also not established in the supplied record. Sources: Inverclyde Now and The Drinks Business, checked November 2026.

The two histories are best read separately: those reports document the earlier distillery, while the modern producer records the present site’s opening in June 2025.[1][5][6] The shared name brings an older local whisky story into view without making the new distillery an uninterrupted continuation of it.
