Bardstown Bourbon Company

Type: Distillery and brand
In October 2026, Bardstown Bourbon Company marked the filling of its one millionth barrel.[2] Commercial production at its Bardstown, Kentucky distillery had begun in September 2016. Much of its work is custom whiskey production for other brands; the bottles carrying Bardstown’s own name tell a separate story. Its Fusion Series arrived in 2019, bringing together whiskey made on site and bourbon sourced elsewhere, alongside a business that now encompasses its own bourbons, blends and barrel finishes.[8][9]

What Bardstown Bourbon Company is known for
Bardstown is a distillery, a custom producer and a whiskey brand. It makes whiskey for other brands as well as its own. Custom production was central from the outset: VinePair reports that its custom capacity was committed before it had started producing bourbon. The later own-label releases added another way to encounter its work rather than replacing that business.[9]
Each range tells a different production story. Origin identifies whiskey distilled for Bardstown; Discovery puts blending at the centre. Fusion Series #1 brought young whiskey made on site together with older bourbon from another Kentucky distillery.[1][9] The name on the label therefore tells only part of the story. The range reveals more about what went into the bottle.
The beginning, and the dates that differ
Commercial production began in September 2016, but accounts disagree over when Bardstown was founded. Pritzker Private Capital's acquisition announcement and the Commonwealth of Kentucky give 2014; a December 2025 Lexington Herald-Leader feature gives 2016.[5][8][11] The founder lists differ too: Pritzker names Peter Loftin, VinePair names Loftin alongside David Mandell, Daniel Linde and Garnett Black, and Washington University describes Mandell and Linde as co-founders.[5][9][10]

The people behind production
Bardstown's first employee arrived with decades of distilling experience. Steve Nally started at Maker's Mark in 1972 and became master distiller in 1988. He later helped launch Wyoming Whiskey before joining Bardstown, linking the young distillery to a much longer career in whiskey.[2][9]
In October 2026, Lofted Spirits named Nick Smith as its Master Distiller and Nally as Master Distiller Emeritus. Smith had joined in 2016. The announcement also marked the filling of the company's one millionth barrel: a change in production leadership alongside a substantial production milestone.[2]
Blending has its own leadership. The producer's 2026 release announcement names Dan Callaway as Master Blender of Lofted Spirits.[7] The distinction matters at a company where making new whiskey and assembling mature components, as in Discovery, are separate parts of the work.
Production and expansion
Bardstown's expansion is visible in its fermentation tanks, capacity and larger site. The producer's October 2024 account traced its growth from an initial scale of 25,000 barrels a year.[4] Along the way, Kentucky's 2022 expansion announcement identified 16 additional fermenters and approximately 55,000 barrels of added annual capacity.[8]
By October 2024, the producer reported three column stills, 48 fermentation tanks and annual capacity of 289,000 barrels, with the site having grown from 100 acres to 400 acres. These are producer-reported figures, rather than an independent plant survey; capacity measures production capability, not barrels actually filled in a given year.[4]

Understanding the whiskey ranges
Fusion and Origin
Fusion Series #1 paired youth with maturity. VinePair describes two-year-old estate bourbon and rye combined with an 11-year, 7-month bourbon from another Kentucky distillery. Both elements shaped the release: Bardstown's young production and a sourced, mature component.[9]
Origin took a different course at the start of 2023. VinePair describes it as the first series entirely distilled for Bardstown by Nally. The launch included a six-year-old bourbon with 36% rye in its mash bill, the grain recipe, bottled at 48% ABV (96 US proof).[9]
A second Origin bourbon was also six years old, with a recipe containing 20% rye, and was bottled at 50% ABV (100 US proof). Those specifications describe the launch releases, not a claim about every subsequent Origin expression.[9]
Discovery and barrel finishes
Discovery is built around blending aged bourbons. The producer describes it as a numbered series, with its website reaching Discovery #13 when checked in November 2026. A separate 2026 annual release announcement describes a Discovery blend containing seven, ten and eleven-year-old bourbons. Those ages apply to that announced release, rather than the series as a whole.[1][7]
Lochs of Jura Barrel Finish brought a practical challenge into the warehouse: the Jura sherry casks were too large for Bardstown's storage racks, so they occupied the aisles instead. According to the producer's announcement, the whiskey spent a further 32 months in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks from Jura and was presented at 52% ABV (104 US proof).[7]
For this particular finish, choosing those casks meant changing how they were stored. The warehouse detail makes the handling of the Lochs of Jura release concrete, rather than describing a standard method for Bardstown's barrel finishes.[7]
Ownership and the wider group
Constellation Brands announced a minority stake in Bardstown in 2016. Pritzker Private Capital announced its acquisition of the company on 7 March 2022. That is the announcement date; the legal completion date has not been independently established.[12][5]
Bardstown then announced an agreement to acquire Green River Spirits Company on 30 June 2022. The later group account records the Green River acquisition in August 2022.[6][3]
Lofted Spirits subsequently brought Bardstown Bourbon Company, Green River Distilling Co. and Lofted Custom Spirits together under a parent owned by Pritzker Private Capital, with Mark Erwin as chief executive.[3]
Common misunderstandings
“Bardstown belongs to Constellation Brands.” Constellation acquired a minority stake in 2016. Lofted Spirits identifies Pritzker Private Capital as its owner; what happened to Constellation's stake is not reliably established.[12][3]
“Bardstown only makes whiskey for other brands.” Custom production is central to the business, but its own Fusion releases began in 2019 and Origin followed in 2023.[9]
“Every Bardstown-labelled whiskey was distilled there.” Fusion Series #1 included sourced bourbon. Origin has a different documented production story. Read provenance range by range, rather than relying on the company name alone.[9]
Visiting and further reading
Kentucky's account describes a visitor centre, event space, whiskey library, bar and restaurant. Before travelling, check the producer's current arrangements for booking, accessibility and age restrictions rather than treating those facilities as confirmation of present visitor access.[8]
