Kyrö

Type: Distillery and brand
The dairy once made Oltermanni cheese. Built in 1908 beside the Kyrö river in Isokyrö, western Finland, it became Kyrö’s whisky-making home, with copper pot stills and 100% malted Finnish rye.[1][2][4][5][6] New American white oak, alder smoke and Finnish peat give that rye several different directions.[1][2][6][8]

What Kyrö is known for
Rye is not a supporting ingredient at Kyrö. Malted Finnish rye makes up the entire grain bill, connecting the founding idea directly to the whisky in the cask.[2][4][6]
The range separates wood smoke from peat smoke: Kyrö Wood Smoke uses alder to smoke the malt, while Kyrö Peat Smoke uses Finnish peat. The names describe distinct treatments, not variations on a single smoky expression.[2][6][8]
The former cheese dairy is just as central to Kyrö’s identity. The producer names Napue as its home village, placing the business within an existing community and a working building’s history, rather than on a purpose-built whisky estate.[1][2][5]
Gin also belongs to the story. Kyrö made it while the whisky matured, developing the business alongside the slower work of ageing spirit.[1][5]
From a sauna conversation to the old dairy
Five friends founded Kyrö: Miika Lipiäinen, Mikko Koskinen, Kalle Valkonen, Miko Heinilä and Jouni Ritola. Before establishing the firm, they studied Mackmyra and consulted people with distilling knowledge. Aalto University’s account places the company’s formation three months after that early investigation.[3]
The first mash was made in the garage of Kalle Valkonen’s parents, according to the producer, then distilled using a borrowed still at the Beer Hunters brewpub in Pori. Those experiments preceded the first firing of the dairy’s own stills.[1]

How Kyrö makes its whisky
The production sequence begins with 100% malted Finnish rye. Whisky Magazine’s 2023 account reports fermentation extended to six days, followed by distillation in copper pot stills. The producer describes the whisky as double pot distilled.[4][8]
The smoky expressions diverge at the malt. Wood Smoke uses alder: the producer describes smoking in a 100-year-old barn, while Whisky Magazine reports a 24-hour smoking period in a traditional Finnish riihi barn. Peat Smoke instead uses Finnish peat. Wood Smoke is therefore alder-smoked, not peated.[2][4][6][8]
Kalle Valkonen is identified as co-founder and head distiller. Whisky Magazine also describes Mari Saarenpää as running the production team and as Finland’s first woman whisky maker. That national distinction is the publication’s attribution, rather than an independently established finding.[4]
Published accounts describe production, including the stills, as running on biogas made from local food waste. This identifies the energy source specifically; it does not describe the environmental performance of every part of the business.[4][6]
Reading the Kyrö whisky range
Four core whiskies, all at 47.2% ABV, were announced on 18 September 2023. That announcement fixes the range at a clear point in time; it does not establish present availability in every market.[6]
| Expression | Published production or cask treatment |
|---|---|
| Kyrö Malt | Matured in new American white oak casks.[2][6] |
| Kyrö Oloroso | Ex-bourbon and white oak maturation, then a Spanish Oloroso sherry cask finish.[2][6] |
| Kyrö Wood Smoke | Alder-smoked malted rye; matured in ex-bourbon, French oak and new American white oak casks.[2][8] |
| Kyrö Peat Smoke | Rye smoked with Finnish peat formed from freshwater plants.[2][6] |
Malt puts new American white oak at the centre; Oloroso adds a sherry cask finishing stage. Wood Smoke and Peat Smoke distinguish the smoking material: alder wood for one, Finnish peat for the other.[2][6][8]
For Peat Smoke, the producer draws a comparison with island peat: it says Finnish peat lacks the sea salt and iodine it associates with that source.[2] This is the producer’s description of the peat, not an analysis of the finished whisky or a universal rule about peat sources.
The producer publishes no age statements for these core whiskies. Their names and cask descriptions are therefore the useful signposts: they explain the treatment of spirit and wood, rather than giving a number of maturation years.[2][6]
Sauna Stories arrived in 2024. The producer describes these as limited annual releases finished in a sauna, a later series distinct both from the founding conversation and from the four-expression core range announced in 2023.[1][2][6]
Production timeline and scale
Kyrö’s foundation dates to 2012; 2014 marks the first firing of the dairy’s stills. Keeping those milestones separate makes the subsequent development of the site and its whisky much easier to follow.[1][3][5]
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2012 | Company founded.[3][5] |
| 2014 | Dairy’s stills first fired, according to the producer.[1] |
| August 2014 | Visitor centre opened.[1] |
| 2017 | Gin and whisky production lines separated.[5] |
| Autumn 2019 | Kyrö Malt joined the permanent range, according to the producer.[1] |
| September 2023 | Four core whiskies announced.[6] |
| 2024 | Sauna Stories series began.[1][2] |
Claim: Accounts differ on when Kyrö Malt was launched.
Verdict: Disputed
What the record shows: The producer dates its first whisky batch to 2017 and Kyrö Malt’s arrival in the permanent range to autumn 2019. Wikipedia dates the launch of Kyrö Malt to August 2020.[1][7]
Evidence against or gap: The exact date of Kyrö Malt’s first general release is not reliably established.
Earliest known source: Not established from the sources supplied.

Whisky Magazine’s 2023 figures give a sense of the operation’s scale: about 100,000 litres of pure alcohol produced a year, with 1.3 million litres maturing in cask. These describe production and stocks reported at that time, rather than current installed capacity.[4]
Expansion plans tell a different part of the story. In 2019, The Spirits Business reported proposals for an adjacent distillery with larger stills and fermenters. The report records what was planned, not what was subsequently installed, so those specifications cannot serve as a present-day equipment list.[5]
Visiting the old dairy
The visitor centre opened in August 2014 under the name “Kyrönmaa Tourism Promotion Centre”, according to the producer. Its opening places visitor provision within the dairy site’s early development, before the later milestones in its permanent whisky range.[1]
Before travelling, consult the official website for booking requirements, accessibility information and age rules for tours. The historical opening date does not establish today’s visitor arrangements, and a visit should be planned from the producer’s current information rather than an older account of the site.
Where to go next
- Mackmyra: explore a distillery the founders studied before establishing Kyrö.
- Stauning: take the questions of grain, production and maturation into your next European distillery guide.
- PUNI: broaden your view of European whisky with another producer profile, rather than treating Kyrö as a template.
