Type: Blended or sourced brand

Near Fort St. George in Madras, Angus McDowell's warehouse handled groceries, tea, wine, spirits and tobacco for the British in India. About 150 years would pass between his arrival and whisky bottles bearing his name. McDowell's No.1 whisky arrived in 1968, drawing its identity from a much older importing business.[5][8][10]

Today, United Spirits Limited, trading as Diageo India, makes the brand. Its September 2026 relaunch introduced a blend the producer describes as combining imported Scotch, Indian malts and grain spirits.[5][2]

What McDowell's No.1 is known for

McDowell's No.1 tells the story of Indian blended spirits, not of a single malt distillery. Its path runs from an importing business in Madras, now Chennai, through the United Breweries group to United Spirits and Diageo. Whisky is one member of a wider family: brandy came first, followed by whisky and, later, light and dark rums.[5]

Diageo India builds the brand around “Yaari”, or friendship. This producer positioning brings the drinks together under a shared spirits identity, rather than presenting McDowell's solely as a whisky range.[1][5]

The scale has been considerable. The Spirits Business reported 19.5 million cases for McDowell's No.1 Reserve in 2012, naming it the world's largest Indian whisky brand that year. That figure belongs specifically to Reserve in 2012, rather than to today's sales of the whole McDowell's family.[7]

An old importing business, a younger whisky

Angus McDowell, a Scot, established a warehouse near Fort St. George in Madras from 1826. His business supplied the British in India with imported groceries, tea, wine and spirits, alongside tobacco products. The trading name preceded the whisky by well over a century.[5][8][10]

Claim: McDowell and Company was founded in a particular year. Verdict: Disputed. Diageo India's brand page gives 1826; The Whiskey Wash dates the importing company to 1828; a Wikipedia brand account gives 1898. Other accounts identify 1898 as the year the firm became a limited company. The precise founding year and earliest source of the claim remain unresolved.[1][5][8][9][10]

For the whisky itself, the decisive date is clear: 1968. The older trading history explains the name, while the launch marks the beginning of McDowell's No.1 whisky. A corporate anniversary and the age of a particular blend are different things.[5]

From United Breweries to United Spirits

The move from importing to a spirits range began under Vittal Mallya's United Breweries group, which acquired McDowell and Company in 1951. In 1959, the group's first distillery opened at Cherthala in Kerala, beside Vembanad lake. Brandy and whisky followed, carrying the McDowell's No.1 name.[5][8][10]

The whisky launched in 1968 was an Indian Made Foreign Liquor, or IMFL, blend that included imported Scotch and Indian malt whiskies. IMFL is the Indian category for Western-style spirits: it identifies neither a particular distillery nor a single recipe.[5]

The chronology separates the milestones in the business from the arrival of the drinks:

Date Event
1951 Vittal Mallya's United Breweries group acquired McDowell and Company.[5][8][10]
1959 The group's first distillery opened at Cherthala, Kerala.[5]
1963 to 1964 McDowell's No.1 brandy was introduced.[5]
1968 McDowell's No.1 whisky was launched.[5][10]
1990 to 1991 Light and dark rums joined the range.[5]
2006 McDowell & Co merged with other distillers to form United Spirits Limited.[5][10]

Vijay Mallya became a McDowell's director in 1973, then chairman in 1983 after Vittal Mallya's death. These management changes came after the whisky's launch and before the merger that created United Spirits.[8][10]

Diageo's own history records the completion of the first stage of its United Spirits acquisition in 2013, when it became the major shareholder. The historical account identifies United Spirits as a Diageo subsidiary following the 2014 takeover. As checked in November 2026, the producer names United Spirits Limited as the business behind McDowell's No.1.[3][5][2]

What changed in September 2026?

A new blend and a redesigned bottle marked the relaunch announced by Diageo India on 25 September 2026. The producer describes imported Scotch, Indian malts and grain spirits, maturation in oak and American barrels, and blending across India and Scotland. This is the company's account of the new blend, rather than an independently measured production specification.[2]

The date matters as much as the ingredients. This description belongs to the September 2026 relaunch, not automatically to every bottle released since 1968. Reserve, Platinum and the other products covered in older reporting retain their own histories and reported compositions.[2][5][6][7]

Diageo India says it tested the relaunch with more than 10,000 consumers in 11 markets. Those figures describe the company's reported development process, rather than a tasting by this site or a verdict on which version an individual reader will prefer.[2]

Reserve, Platinum and Distiller's Batch

Reserve is the expression behind The Spirits Business's 2012 volume figure. Its reported composition also illustrates why it pays to distinguish individual McDowell's releases from broader descriptions of the brand.[7]

Claim: McDowell's No.1 has a specified base spirit. Verdict: Disputed. The Spirits Business described Reserve as using grain rather than molasses; The Whiskey Wash describes a molasses spirit base in its broader account. The reports cover different ground. Today's composition and the earliest source of the claim are not reliably established.[7][5]

Platinum has a more specific published description: Moneycontrol calls it a 100% grain-based blend developed by Scottish master blender Richard Paterson.[6]

Claim: Platinum was launched in a particular year. Verdict: Disputed. Moneycontrol gives March 2010, while Wikipedia gives 2011. The supplied record leaves both the launch year and the earliest source of the claim unresolved.[6][10]

April 2024 brought a separate development: the announcement of McDowell's & Co. Distiller's Batch Indian Single Malt. According to The Whiskey Wash, it was distilled and matured at Nashik, with ex-bourbon and virgin oak maturation followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz casks. The announced run was 6,000 bottles, first sold in Gurgaon.[5]

Distiller's Batch has its own name and reported production origin. Nashik belongs to that single malt's story; the report does not identify it as a supplying distillery for the mainstream McDowell's No.1 blend.[5]

Common mistakes about the name

Treating 1826 as the whisky's launch date. The producer uses that date for the early business history. McDowell's No.1 whisky arrived in 1968, after the first brandy bearing the name.[1][5]

Calling the blend Scotch whisky. The producer lists imported Scotch as one ingredient in its 2026 Indian blend, alongside Indian malts and grain spirits. The finished product is not described as Scotch.[2]

Assuming every McDowell's product is whisky. The name also covers brandy and rum. Reports about Reserve or Platinum apply to those expressions, rather than automatically describing every other release.[5][6][7]

Reading “No.1” as a current independent ranking. It is part of the brand name. Sales leadership claims need a date and a defined scope, including the producer's reference to the 2020 Million Case spirits brand ranking.[1]
