Type: Explainer

Before its first whisky came apple juice. Nikka’s company was established in 1934, apple juice followed in 1935, and whisky production began in 1936. Its first Nikka Whisky arrived in June 1940.[1] That history brings together founder Masataka Taketsuru, the distilleries at Yoichi and Miyagikyo, and ranges including Taketsuru Pure Malt, Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt.

What Nikka Whisky is known for

Pot stills and Coffey stills run through Nikka’s history. The former are associated with its malt distilleries; the latter arrived at its Nishinomiya Plant in 1963. In 1999, the Coffey stills moved to Miyagikyo, bringing the distillery into both Nikka’s malt whisky story and the development of its Coffey-named ranges.[1]

Blending is just as firmly part of the picture. Black Nikka appeared in 1956, Super Nikka in 1962 and Hi-Nikka in 1964. Nikka’s timeline then records Black Nikka being blended with Coffey Grain in 1965.[1] The company’s identity reaches well beyond either Yoichi or Miyagikyo: its named blends and ranges have their own long histories.

For anyone exploring Nikka, the bottle’s full name is the best starting point. Taketsuru Pure Malt, Coffey Grain, Coffey Malt and From The Barrel each occupy a distinct place in the release history.[1] The portfolio took shape over decades, with different equipment, sites and expressions entering the story at different times.

From fruit juice to whisky

Dai Nippon Kaju Co., Ltd. was established on 2 July 1934, and Yoichi Distillery was completed that October. Nikka’s chronology records apple juice in 1935, whisky and brandy production in 1936, and apple wine in 1938.[1] The fruit business and the whisky business belong to the same founding story, but the distillery’s completion, the start of whisky production and the first whisky release mark three separate steps.

The first release bearing the Nikka Whisky name arrived in June 1940. In 1952, the business became The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd. and moved its head office to Tokyo.[1] The company’s establishment date remains 1934; 1940 marks its first whisky release, and 1952 its change of company name.

Field Record
Founding story Masataka Taketsuru founded Dai Nippon Kaju Co., Ltd., established on 2 July 1934. Yoichi Distillery was completed in Yoichi, Hokkaido, that October. The first Nikka Whisky followed in June 1940.[1]
Turning point Miyagikyo’s completion in 1969 added a second named distillery to the company’s history.[1]
Documented record Nikka’s chronology separates establishment in 1934, the start of whisky production in 1936 and the first whisky release in 1940.[1]

The people behind the company also changed as it developed. Masataka Taketsuru became president in 1943. His nephew and adopted son, Takeshi Taketsuru, joined in 1949.[1] Their milestones sit alongside the production and release dates, giving the family story its place within the wider history of the business.

Yoichi and Miyagikyo

Nikka’s two principal distilleries belong to different chapters. Yoichi, in Yoichi, Hokkaido, dates to the founding period in 1934. Miyagikyo, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, followed with the company’s expansion in 1969.[1] These are separate distilleries, each with its own place in Nikka’s production history.

At Yoichi, traditional coal-fired distillation remains part of production, according to Nikka’s own account checked in November 2026.[3]

Miyagikyo’s opening year is agreed; its name at opening is disputed.[1][5]

Verdict: Disputed

Claim: The distillery opened as Sendai Distillery and was renamed Miyagikyo in 2001.

What the record shows: Whisky.com gives that account; Nikka’s timeline uses Miyagikyo for 1969.

Evidence against or gap: The accounts differ on the name used at opening.

Earliest known source: Not reliably established.

The distilleries were established long before the named single malts recorded here. Yoichi Single Malt 12 Years Old and Single Malt Sendai-Miyagikyo 12 Years Old both appear in Nikka’s 1989 chronology.[1] For an older bottle, that distinction matters: the date a distillery was completed is not the launch date of a whisky carrying its name.

Taketsuru Pure Malt

Taketsuru Pure Malt carries the founder’s surname. Nikka launched Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 Years Old in 2000.[1] When researching an older bottle, use the full expression name: “Taketsuru” alone is less precise, and the historical 12 Years Old age statement does not describe every bottle subsequently sold under that name.

Nikka also records an earlier Pure Malt launch in 1984.[1] That entry and the later Taketsuru Pure Malt 12 Years Old are distinct milestones. Keeping both in view gives a clearer account of the range’s development than assigning a single launch date to everything called Pure Malt.

The shared family name can make the company and range histories seem closer together than they are. Nikka’s first whisky appeared in 1940; the documented Taketsuru Pure Malt milestone came in 2000.[1] One date answers when the company first released whisky, the other when this particular expression arrived.

Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt

Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt share an equipment history, but they arrived as named releases at different times. Nikka records Coffey Grain’s European pre-launch in 2012 and Coffey Malt’s launch in 2014.[1] For Coffey Grain, Europe is an important part of the date: the record describes a regional pre-launch, not a worldwide launch.

The stills’ story begins much earlier. A Coffey still was installed at Nishinomiya in 1963, and Black Nikka was being blended with Coffey Grain in 1965, according to Nikka’s chronology.[1] Coffey production was therefore already part of the company’s work long before the later Coffey Grain release.

In 1999, the Coffey stills moved to Miyagikyo.[1] That move connects the equipment’s Nishinomiya years with its later home at a distillery already established in Nikka’s history. It also explains why Miyagikyo appears in accounts of both malt distilling and the Coffey-named ranges.

Coffey Malt and The Nikka 12 Years Old both arrived in 2014.[1] They are separate expressions; the latter’s age statement does not apply to Coffey Malt.

Asahi and Nikka’s company history

Asahi’s relationship with Nikka has a longer history than the 2001 entry alone suggests. Nikka records support through investment from Asahi Breweries during 1952 to 1968, followed by Nikka joining Asahi Breweries, Ltd. in 2001.[1] Gauntleys gives a different account of the earlier period, stating that Asahi had purchased the company by 1954.[4] The precise date and form of that earlier control remain unresolved.

Verdict: Disputed

Claim: Asahi had purchased Nikka by 1954.

What the record shows: Gauntleys gives that account, while Nikka records investment during 1952 to 1968 and joining Asahi Breweries, Ltd. in 2001.

Evidence against or gap: The precise date and form of earlier control are not reliably established.

Earliest known source: Not reliably established.

The 2001 entry documents the relationship at that point.[1] Nikka’s current ownership and ultimate parent are not reliably established in the supplied record.
