Proximo Spirits

Copper pot stills in a whiskey distillery
Copper pot stills in a whiskey distillery

Type: Owner group

Ten copper pot stills stand at Causeway Distillery, opened beside Old Bushmills in April 2023 to make what the producer describes as the same triple distilled spirit.[3][4] The new facility serves Bushmills, part of a Proximo Spirits portfolio that also brings together Stranahan’s, TINCUP and Pendleton.[2]

Established in 2007 according to its own account, Proximo belongs to Becle, the publicly traded Mexican group controlled by the Beckmann family. Whiskey is one part of a wider spirits business spanning tequila, rum, vodka and gin.[1][2][8][10][12]

What Proximo Spirits is known for

Tequila sits at the heart of Proximo’s own account of its history, but its portfolio reaches well beyond it. The company lists purchases including Stranahan’s and Pendleton alongside Three Olives Vodka, Hangar 1 Vodka and Boodles Gin. TINCUP American Whiskey and Kraken Rum, by contrast, are names it says it created.[2] Buying an established business and building a new brand are different routes into the same portfolio.

Distribution adds another layer. In 2013, Proximo took over US distribution of Jose Cuervo from Diageo, according to the producer’s account and trade reporting.[1][2][10] The company also lists 1800, Gran Centenario, Maestro Dobel, 400 Conejos and Creyente among the names it distributes.[2]

The key is the relationship behind each name: owning a company, distillery or brand is different from distributing its products.

A US headquarters, a Mexican parent

Proximo is headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, but its parentage is Mexican. Trade reporting places it within Becle, which is controlled by the Beckmann family.[8][10][12] The American headquarters and Mexican ownership are distinct parts of the company’s identity.

The dates need the same care. Proximo’s establishment in 2007 is not the founding date of every business or brand associated with it.[1][2] Stranahan’s was co-founded in 2004; the Bushmills distillery company dates from 1784.[6][14] Each has a history that began before its association with the group.

A brand’s beginning, an acquisition announcement and the legal change of ownership belong on separate lines of the chronology. The guide to how distillery ownership changes explains the broader framework. Bushmills offers a particularly clear example of why those distinctions matter.

Bushmills: an agreement and a disputed acquisition year

In November 2014, Diageo agreed to sell Bushmills to Jose Cuervo Overseas and acquire the half of Don Julio it did not already own.[5] That report names Jose Cuervo Overseas as the purchaser. It records an agreement, rather than establishing that an identically named Proximo legal entity completed the purchase that month.

Proximo’s own timeline places the Bushmills acquisition under 2016.[2] The acquisition-year story is therefore Disputed. November 2014 is the agreement announcement; the exact completion date remains unestablished.

Bushmills has another date worth reading closely. Its familiar 1608 date concerns a licence to distil, according to the distributor’s account. The distillery company dates from 1784 under Hugh Anderson, according to Whiskey Atlas.[11][14] The licence is part of the history, but it is not the company’s founding date.

Causeway expands Bushmills production

Causeway Distillery opened beside the Old Bushmills Distillery in April 2023, lifting Bushmills’ installed production capacity from five million to 11 million litres of alcohol a year, according to trade reporting.[4] Those figures describe capacity, not actual annual output. The capacity information was checked in November 2026.

The producer describes Causeway as making the same triple distilled spirit as the original distillery. It reports 10 copper pot stills, eight washbacks and one mash tun, with the building designed by TODD Architects to master distiller Colum Egan’s vision. These production and design details were also checked in November 2026.[3]

The spirit goes into Bushmills: Causeway is a production facility, not a separate whiskey brand.[4] Its opening expanded the means of making an established whiskey rather than adding another name to the portfolio. Bushmills 25 and 30 Year Old were launched alongside the opening, according to the producer.[3]

Stranahan’s: from a barn fire to a later sale

A barn fire brings the founders together in the distributor’s account of Stranahan’s. In 1998, volunteer firefighter Jess Graber answered a fire at George Stranahan’s property, an event the account presents as the beginning of their connection.[11]

Graber and Stranahan co-founded the business in 2004. Proximo bought it in December 2010, with reporting at the time stating that Graber would remain involved in quality control and as brand ambassador.[6] The founding and sale are recorded by Westword; the fire story rests on the distributor’s history, without contemporary documentation in the supplied record.

Other whiskey interests and recent changes

Pendleton was bought; TINCUP American Whiskey was created. That is the distinction in Proximo’s own account.[2] It explains how the names entered the portfolio, but not where every whiskey bearing them was distilled. For production origin, follow the evidence separately from brand ownership, as explained in brands that do not own a distillery.

Proper No. Twelve has a staged ownership history. It launched on 17 September 2018, taking its name from Dublin 12. Proximo held 49% before taking a majority on 27 April 2021, then became its full owner in November 2024.[7] Minority investment, majority control and full ownership mark three distinct steps in that history.

More recent developments concern both visitors and management. Trade reporting says Proximo closed the Great Jones Distilling Co visitor centre in Manhattan in October 2026, after five years.[8] The closure concerns the visitor centre and does not establish a change in distilling status.

Separately, Johnny Roberts, formerly of Berry Bros & Rudd, became UK general manager in 2026.[9] That appointment belongs to the management story, rather than the portfolio’s acquisition or production history.

In short: reading the portfolio without mixing up the relationships

  • Bushmills shows why an acquisition agreement and a production expansion need separate dates; Stranahan’s separates a founding story from a later sale; Proper No. Twelve shows ownership building through successive stakes.[2][3][4][5][6][7] Together, they explain more about Proximo than a single portfolio timeline could.
  • Follow the named business, the event and its date. The same approach clarifies Proximo’s relationship with Diageo, which appears in both the Cuervo distribution change and the Bushmills transaction.[5][10]
