Type: Distillery and brand

A barn fire in Woody Creek brought volunteer firefighter Jess Graber and ranch owner George Stranahan together in 1998. They founded Stranahan's in Denver, Colorado, in 2004. Today, the name belongs to both the distillery and its American single malt whiskey brand, made from 100% malted barley. [1][6]

What Stranahan's is known for

Stranahan's is American single malt, not bourbon. Malted barley is its grain, and its range stretches from Original to older age stated releases, all rooted in the brand's Denver production history. [1][3]

Casks play a prominent part in that range. Alongside its account of maturation in new American oak, the producer describes Sherry Cask's finish in 500 litre Oloroso casks. Snowflake has a different distinction: it is an annual December limited release. One name identifies a specific cask finish; the other marks a recurring release in the distillery's calendar. [2][3][10]

The producer calls Stranahan's “Colorado's first legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition”. Its founding in 2004 is separately documented; the claim to be first remains the producer's rather than an independently established distinction. [1][6]

The barn fire and the founders

Before the Denver distillery came experiments in the barn using Flying Dog leftovers, described by Aspen Public Radio. The 1998 fire at George Stranahan's Woody Creek ranch, which Graber attended as a volunteer firefighter, preceded the Denver facility's opening by six years. [6]

George Stranahan was a physicist, and the business carries his surname. He and Graber established Stranahan's in 2004; according to the producer, the first bottle of Original followed in 2006. George Stranahan died in 2021. [1][6]

Story box: A fire before the first whiskey

Verdict: Documented

Claim: The founders met at a barn fire in Woody Creek in 1998. The record supports their meeting and subsequent partnership, not a distillery opening in that year: the Denver facility opened in 2004. No contrary evidence is recorded in the fact sheet, although the tale's earliest source is not reliably established. Sources: Aspen Public Radio and the producer's account, checked November 2026. [1][6]

From Blake Street to Kalamath Street

Stranahan's began its Denver life at 2405 Blake Street. In May 2009, it moved into the former Heavenly Daze brewery building at 200 South Kalamath Street. Westword documents the move, with no contrary account recorded in the fact sheet. This was a change of premises, distinct from the 2004 founding and the first bottling in 2006. [4][9]

Ownership changed the following year. In 2010, Proximo Spirits acquired Stranahan's and Tincup, including the Denver distillery, ending Stranahan's independent ownership. Graber stayed involved as a brand ambassador after the sale. The sources checked do not reliably establish the current exact legal owner or ultimate parent. [4][5]

The production team changed too. Trade accounts record Rob Dietrich succeeding Jake Norris as master distiller in 2011 and Justin Aden becoming head blender in May 2023. These are documented appointments, rather than confirmation that either person holds the same role today. [10][11]

Verdict: Disputed

Claim: Accounts differ on Proximo's base at the time of the acquisition. Westword places it in New York; The Denver Post places it in New Jersey. Its location at the time is not reliably established. Sources: Westword and The Denver Post, checked November 2026. [4][9]

How Stranahan's whiskey is made

Malted barley, yeast and Rocky Mountain water form the producer's ingredient list, with 100% malted barley supplying the grain. A 2016 distillery report names El Dorado Springs as the source of proofing water, used to reduce the spirit's strength. That detail concerns a particular stage of production, rather than identifying one water source for the entire process. [1][7]

The same report offers a close view of production in 2016: six days of fermentation in 5,500 gallon fermenters, followed by distillation using three wash stills and two spirit stills. It describes those stills as pot and column hybrids. Another trade account describes double distillation in copper pot stills. [7][10]

Verdict: Disputed

Claim: Accounts differ on how to describe Stranahan's stills. The 2016 Alcademics report describes pot and column hybrids; The Spirits Educator describes double distillation in copper pot stills. The current still count and type are not reliably established. Sources: Alcademics and The Spirits Educator, checked November 2026. [7][10]

New American oak barrels with a number 3 char and a minimum of four years define the producer's maturation account. The 2016 visit report records Independent Stave barrels, barrel entry at 110 US proof and whiskey that was not chill filtered. It also describes Original as mostly two years old, contrasting with the producer's later four year minimum. [3][7]

Those 2016 observations describe production at the time, not a specification for every later release. Equally, do not assume the later maturation account explains earlier bottles. For anyone researching an older Original, the useful description is the one from its own period. [3][7]

Reading the Stranahan's range

Original, Blue Peak, Diamond Peak and Mountain Angel 10 Year make up the producer's listed core range. Its account also records a Mountain Angel 14 Year release and an eleven year old Bottled in Bond whiskey. The producer describes the latter as Colorado's oldest bottled in bond whiskey, a distinction presented as its own claim. [1][3]

A solera, an Oloroso finish and an age statement tell different stories about a whiskey. These documented differences help distinguish the expressions, without turning production details into tasting notes.

Expression Documented distinction
Original First bottled in 2006, according to the producer. [1]
Blue Peak Reported at 43% ABV; solera uses a 620 gallon foeder, a large wooden vessel. [10]
Sherry Cask Finished in 500 litre Oloroso casks; reported at 47% ABV. [2][10]
Mountain Angel 10 Year Listed in the producer's core range. [3]
Mountain Angel 14 Year Release recorded by the producer. [1]

Snowflake and its disputed beginning

Snowflake is the annual December limited release. Its names look to Colorado's high country: Westword reports that editions are named after peaks over 14,000 feet, identifying Redcloud Peak as the 27th edition. [2][11]

Verdict: Disputed

Claim: Snowflake began in 2007. Westword gives that year, while the producer's page uses both “Since 2009” and “first release in 2011”. The sources do not resolve the starting year. Sources: Westword and the producer's account, checked November 2026. [2][11]

The producer announced Snowflake Batch #29 for 5 December 2026, with a limit of three 750ml bottles per person. At the November 2026 check, it had been announced but not yet released. [2]

Stranahan's and American single malt

Stranahan's places its involvement in the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission's formation in 2016 within its campaign for a recognised category. The producer says it petitioned the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, or TTB. That campaign is documented; the producer's account alone does not establish how much influence it had on the outcome. [3]

American single malt now has a US legal definition. TTB announced its final American single malt whisky rule on 18 December 2024, effective from 19 January 2025. Descriptions of the category as legally undefined are therefore out of date. [8]

The standard requires 100% malted barley and production at one US distillery. Distillation must be at no more than 160 proof, oak casks must hold no more than 700 litres, and bottling must be at no less than 80 proof. The legal category uses the spelling “American single malt whisky”; Stranahan's uses “whiskey”. [8]

Denver visits and the Aspen connection

The Denver distillery has a visitor centre listed by the producer, which also describes Cask Thief events. A trade account records a public lottery for volunteer bottling, giving visitors another way to take part in distillery life. Check the official website before visiting for current information about access and events. [2][3][10]

In March 2024, Stranahan's marked its twentieth anniversary by opening its Whiskey Lodge on Mill Street in Aspen. Distinct from the Denver production site, it brought the brand closer to its beginnings at Woody Creek, a connection documented by Aspen Public Radio. [6]
