Tomintoul

Type: Distillery
One heavily peated batch a year gives Tomintoul’s “the gentle dram” tagline a different edge. Built in the 1960s, the distillery makes both unpeated and peated spirit, including spirit for Old Ballantruan. Alongside whisky bearing its own name, it supplies its owner’s blends and contract customers. Gentleness is the calling card, not the limit of its production. [3, 4]
Origins and ownership
Two Glasgow whisky trading firms, Hay & MacLeod and W. & S. Strong, built Tomintoul under the name Tomintoul-Glenlivet Distillery Company. This was a distillery born of the whisky trade, rather than a Victorian enterprise. [4, 6]
Its precise founding year remains disputed. The fact sheet gives 1965; Wikipedia gives 1964. Neither account resolves the difference, though both place its beginnings firmly in the 1960s. [2, 6, 7]
The ownership record has another unresolved point in 1973, when accounts name either Scottish and Universal Investment Trust or Whyte & Mackay. The available evidence does not establish which was the owner. [4]
In 2000, Tomintoul was sold to Angus Dundee Distillers, also the owner of Glencadam. Tomintoul continues to supply spirit for Angus Dundee’s own blends and contract customers, as well as making the whisky associated with its own name. That broader production role remains part of the distillery’s business. [4]
Production
In 1974, a second pair of steam heated stills doubled Tomintoul’s capacity. The stills are described as tall and slender for the region. Each wash still holds 15,000 litres and each spirit still 11,500 litres, while an individual washback holds 59,000 litres. [4, 5]
Stated annual capacity is 3,300,000 litres of pure alcohol. That measures potential production, not the amount necessarily distilled in any given year. The unit matters too: litres of pure alcohol are different from litres of spirit, so figures expressed in the two forms cannot be compared directly. [2]
The vessel sizes give a sense of the operation’s scale, but the available evidence does not reliably establish the number of washbacks or the fermentation time. Those remain gaps in the production record.
Peated spirit and Old Ballantruan
Peated spirit has been part of Tomintoul’s production since 2001. Each year, the distillery runs one heavily peated batch, described as about 55 ppm. The evidence does not specify which material was measured for that figure. Tomintoul is therefore not exclusively unpeated, despite the gentle identity of its tagline. [3, 4]
In 2024, it produced 450,000 litres of peated spirit. This is reported as litres of spirit, rather than the litres of pure alcohol used for the annual capacity figure above. Keeping those units distinct preserves the meaning of both figures. [3]
Old Ballantruan comes from Tomintoul, not a separate distillery. According to the documented account, it uses the same water, yeast and stills as the unpeated spirit. The two styles do not require separate sets of stills: peated production is part of the Tomintoul operation. [4]
Releases and community
A Tomintoul 12 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish featured among the releases reported by Angus Dundee in 2025. The company also reported single 2012 vintage releases for both Tomintoul and Glencadam. The two distillery names remained distinct within the shared ownership. [1]
The distillery also funds the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, according to the producer. [1]
Reading the record
The founding year and the identity of Tomintoul’s owner in 1973 remain unresolved. The second pair of stills in 1974 and the sale to Angus Dundee in 2000 are recorded in the supplied fact sheet. [4, 6]
The production figures describe individual wash stills, spirit stills and washbacks, or annual capacity in litres of pure alcohol. Vessel capacities and annual capacity are distinct measures; none should be substituted for another. [2, 4, 5]
The available evidence leaves the distillery’s precise location, visitor arrangements and dates of several earlier releases unconfirmed. Those details are omitted here.
