Whisky Records: Largest Bottles and Other Verified Firsts

At about 1.8 metres tall, The Intrepid holds 311 litres of Macallan single malt distilled in 1989. Presented in Huntly, Scotland, on 9 September 2021, it is the largest whisky bottle listed by Guinness World Records (GWR), checked in November 2026.[1][4]

Whisky records range from giant bottles to historic collections, crowded tastings and spirit sent into orbit. The best stories lie in the details: what was counted, when it happened and exactly what the title recognises.

At a glance

How to read whisky records

Start with the category. The largest bottle is not the largest collection, and the oldest surviving whisky is a different subject from the oldest operating distillery. GWR warns that records change daily and are not immediately published online. The entries below reflect its published records as checked in November 2026.[4][5][7]

Dates need equal care. A record page may give an achievement date, a verification date or a historical entry date. Keep that date with the claim, particularly where an old entry could otherwise read as a fresh statement about a business.

Largest whisky bottles: three holders over ten years

The Intrepid contains 32 year old Macallan single malt. GWR names Rosewin Holdings PLC and Fah Mai Holdings Group Inc. as the organisations that presented the bottle in Huntly.[1][4]

Its predecessors show the scale of the record's growth. In September 2011, Jack Daniel's presented a 184 litre bottle in New York for the brand's birthday. It stood 1.52 metres tall and measured 48.5 centimetres across. The following year, a 228 litre bottle of The Famous Grouse was unveiled at Glenturret.[2][3]

Three bottles, ten years

Daniel Monk founded The Intrepid Project, with Jon Land as project manager and Sarah Crawley as designer, according to GWR. The presentation of its 311 litre bottle on 9 September 2021 established the largest bottle record listed by GWR in November 2026.[1]

The documented progression is clear:

Year Bottle Capacity GWR source
2011 Jack Daniel's 184 litres Jack Daniel's report [2]
2012 The Famous Grouse 228 litres Glenturret article [3]
2021 The Intrepid 311 litres Largest bottle entry, also recording the project roles [1]

This account was last checked in November 2026; the exact day is not documented.

Verdict: Documented. GWR records the three bottles, their capacities and their respective years, supporting the passage of the title through these holders between 2011 and 2021. The sequence does not establish that the 2011 bottle was the first holder. The earliest known source is GWR's Jack Daniel's report of 14 September 2011.[2] The verdict draws on all three GWR accounts [1][2][3] and was last checked in November 2026; the exact day is not documented.

The familiar Famous Grouse bottle belongs in the record's history, rather than at the top of the current list. Its 2012 achievement stands, even though a larger bottle followed.[1][3]

Oldest whisky is not oldest distillery

GWR's oldest whisky entry names Old Vatted Glenlivet Scotch Whiskey 1842, acquired privately by Nguyen Dinh Tuan Viet of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and verified on 21 April 2026. The year 1842 is part of the bottle's recorded identity, not an age statement counting years in a cask.[5]

A separate title, oldest Scotch whisky sold in a private sale, belongs to a Glenavon Whisky bottle. GWR describes it as 172 years old when Nguyen Dinh Tuan Viet bought it. The entry gives a purchase date of 27 March 2023, although its separate “When” field states 24 October 2023.[6]

Both records concern historic bottles, not distillery antiquity. For a broader look at documentary dating and authentication, turn to historic whisky bottles.

For distilleries, the starting point changes the answer. GWR's entry dated 14 November 2000 names Strathisla in Keith, founded in 1786, as the oldest operating Scotch whisky distillery. Its Glenturret article, meanwhile, describes that distillery as dating to 1717, “when it operated illegally”, and calls it a contender for Scotland's oldest.[7][3]

Verdict: Disputed. Scotland's oldest distillery cannot be identified without specifying the test used. GWR's operating distillery title for Strathisla and its account of Glenturret's earlier claim of illegal operation use different starting points; Glenturret's 1717 claim remains disputed.[7][3] The earliest known source for this comparison is GWR's Strathisla entry, dated 14 November 2000.[7] The assessment draws on that entry and the Glenturret article [7][3], last checked in November 2026; the exact day is not documented.

Bourbon has its own category. GWR's oldest operating bourbon distillery entry, dated 3 April 2001, names Maker's Mark in Loretto, Kentucky, and describes bourbon distilling there since 1805. That wording belongs to the historical GWR entry; it is not a newly verified report on operating status.[8]

Collections and bars count different things

10,500 unduplicated bottles make up the largest whisky bottle collection listed by GWR. Its holder, Alfredo M. Goncalves, had the collection recorded in Lisbon in November 2005. The bottles were displayed at his shop, Whisky & Co.[10]

GWR says Goncalves began collecting about forty years earlier while working in Africa, and opened Whisky & Co. so the public could see the collection. “Unduplicated” is the key to the count: the record measures distinct bottles, rather than every bottle stored in one place.[10]

The bar record asks a different question: how many varieties are commercially available? GWR records 2,467 varieties at The Whiskey House in San Diego, California, on 15 January 2019, marking the bar's fourth anniversary. That selection covered whisky from 23 countries, 42 US states and Washington DC.[11]

One record describes a collection of distinct bottles; the other captures the selection available at a particular venue on a particular date.

Gatherings, online tastings and a record birthday

2,283 people gathered for the largest whisky tasting event listed by GWR, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 13 April 2019. Nigab and Bruichladdich organised the event at Öl and Whisky Mässan, with Bruichladdich's head distiller, Adam Hannett, leading the tasting.[12]

Online tastings have their own category. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society recorded 447 participants on 30 September 2023 during its fortieth anniversary celebrations. In a separate gathering record, Scotmid Coop's Edinburgh event on 24 January 2020 holds the largest Burns supper title, with 926 participants.[13][14]

These are attendance records, not targets for consumption. Their interest lies in the organisation and shared occasion, not in how much anyone drank.

At Jack Daniel's September 2011 birthday event in New York, bottles became both a portrait and musical instruments. Alongside the giant bottle, GWR recorded a mosaic made from 2,120 empty one litre bottles, forming a portrait of Jack Daniel. A bottle orchestra used 475 bottles, with 19 volunteers each playing 25 partly filled bottles.[2]

A flavour record measured through casks

The title “Greatest variety of flavours in a whisky” sounds like a tally of tasting descriptors. Its measure is more concrete: 33 casks, with each cask finishing lasting at least 24 hours. GWR records the achievement for Alexander Johnson and Johnson Reserve in Glenfarg, Scotland, verified on 1 August 2024.[15]

The title therefore documents an achievement measured through casks, rather than an independently demonstrated set of 33 flavours that every taster will identify.

A first beyond GWR: spirit in orbit

In October 2011, vials of new make spirit and cask fragments travelled through NanoRacks LLC to the US National Lab on the International Space Station. The account comes from Ardbeg's September 2015 release, rather than GWR.[18]

Ardbeg says the samples orbited about 200 miles above Earth for “almost three years”. It describes itself as the first distillery to send spirit into orbit, a first claimed by the producer, not a GWR title.[18]

The producer reported differences between the space samples and Islay controls in three of four analyses. One phenolic compound was much lower in the space samples, which also contained fewer of the wood compounds that are hard to extract. These reported findings describe differences in the spirit, not evidence of better quality.[18]

The boundary between spirits history and whisky history

The oldest documented spirit recipe listed by GWR reaches back to “no later than 196 CE”. It concerns the Jiuyun Chinese spirits distillation method at Bozhou, Anhui, and was verified on 26 September 2018.[17]

That is a spirits record, not a whisky record. The distinction matters: an early distillation claim does not, by itself, establish whisky's beginnings.
