Whisky Trivia: 50 Sourced Facts

Whisky trivia is most interesting when the evidence is as memorable as the claim. These 50 sourced facts run from nuclear testing and counterfeit bottles to distillery cats, enormous collections and whisky in space, with record dates and source attributions kept beside the numbers.
Whisky trivia: fakes and science
-
Nuclear weapons tests left a whisky dating tool. Atmospheric radiocarbon peaked in 1963; growing barley absorbed it, leaving a datable signature in whisky distilled after 1955. [1]
-
Testing need not mean opening the bottle. CNN's report describes drawing about one millilitre through the cork, leaving the bottle sealed for the radiocarbon investigation. [3]
-
The barley clock needs an adjustment. Glasgow's whisky dating curve runs one year behind the standard bomb curve, reflecting the average delay between growth and distillation. [2]
-
In December 2018, Glasgow reported that 21 of 55 rare Scotch bottles bought on the secondary market were fake or not distilled in the year claimed. [1]
-
Every malt in that study supposedly dating from around 1900 or earlier was fake. That finding concerns the tested bottles, not every surviving bottle of that period. [1]
-
A single malt labelled 1863 proved to have been distilled in 2005. The date on the label and the date established by testing were radically different. [2]
-
Oxford's Tom Higham told Scientific American in 2009 that his laboratory had probably seen “more fakes among the samples we've tested than real examples of old whisky”. [4]
-
The supposed 1878 Macallan served in St Moritz in August 2017 was a malt and grain blend. Verdict: Documented. Testing placed its production between 1970 and 1972 with 95% probability, and the hotel refunded the buyer. [5]
Evidence gap: The dating result is probabilistic. Earliest known source: Not established from the sources checked. Source: swissinfo.ch, 2 November 2017. Last checked: 7 November 2026.
-
A bottle labelled Laphroaig 1903 underwent six months of tests. Drinks International reported that it was actually blended Scotch made between 2007 and 2009. [6]
-
Macallan bought about 100 antique bottles between 2000 and 2002. ScotchWhisky.com reports that samples from 16, labelled 1856 to 1919, all contained spirit made after 1950. [7]
-
Documentary scrutiny mattered too: ScotchWhisky.com's account identifies a name misspelling on a supposed 1893 Macallan label as evidence of forgery, separate from the liquid analysis. [7]
-
The St Moritz dating result came with a probability, not just a year range: swissinfo reported a 95% probability for the 1970 to 1972 date. [5]
-
Bottle shape alone cannot settle a whisky's age. The Society for Historical Archaeology's dating guide notes that the classic cylindrical whiskey fifth remained in production too long. [9]
-
Mouth-blown moulded bottles mostly belong to a broad period, about 1820 to 1915, according to the same guide. That span is not a precise bottling date. [9]
Records with dates attached
-
The Intrepid holds Guinness World Records' largest whisky bottle title: 311 litres, presented in Huntly, Scotland, on 9 September 2021. [10]
-
Inside The Intrepid is 32 year old Macallan single malt, distilled in 1989. [10]
-
Its predecessor was a 228 litre bottle of The Famous Grouse, unveiled at Glenturret in 2012. [12]
-
Jack Daniel's had previously set the record in New York in September 2011. Its bottle held 184 litres and stood 1.52 metres tall. [11]
-
The same 2011 event produced a bottle orchestra record: 19 volunteers played 475 partly filled bottles. [11]
-
Another record at that event used empty bottles. A portrait of Jack Daniel was assembled from 2,120 empty litre bottles of Jack Daniel's whiskey. [11]
-
GWR's oldest whisky entry names Old Vatted Glenlivet Scotch Whiskey 1842, verified on 21 April 2026. This is a bottle record, not a distillery founding claim. [13]
-
A Glenavon Whisky bottle was 172 years old when bought in Ho Chi Minh City on 27 March 2023, according to GWR's private sale record. [14]
-
GWR names Strathisla, founded in Keith in 1786, as the oldest operating Scotch distillery. The broader oldest distillery claim is Disputed: Glenturret cites a 1763 rental record, while a GWR article gives 1717. These claims use different tests. [12][15][28]
-
GWR's oldest operating bourbon distillery entry names Maker's Mark in Loretto, Kentucky, citing distilling since 1805. That is the record body's wording and historical test. [16]
-
GWR records the auction of The Macallan Valerio Adami 60 Year Old at Sotheby's, London, on 18 November 2023. The whisky was distilled in 1926. [17]
-
The largest collection in GWR's entry comprises 10,500 unduplicated bottles. It belonged to Alfredo M. Goncalves of Lisbon, with the record dated November 2005. [18]
-
The Whiskey House in San Diego offered 2,467 whiskies from 23 countries on 15 January 2019, earning GWR's record for commercially available whisky varieties. [19]
-
Gothenburg hosted a record whisky tasting of 2,283 people on 13 April 2019. Bruichladdich's Adam Hannett led the event recorded by Guinness World Records. [20]
-
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society's online tasting drew 447 participants on 30 September 2023. The record event marked the society's 40th anniversary. [21]
-
A whisky finished in 33 different casks, each for at least 24 hours, holds GWR's greatest variety of flavours record, verified in Glenfarg on 1 August 2024. [22]
-
Scotmid Coop's Burns supper in Edinburgh brought together 926 guests on 24 January 2020. GWR records it as the largest Burns supper. [23]
Cats with a paper trail
-
Towser of Glenturret holds GWR's greatest mouser title, with an estimated 28,899 mice. The word estimated is essential to understanding this unusually famous distillery statistic. [24]
-
She was a female tortoiseshell, born on 21 April 1963 and dying on 20 March 1987. GWR supplies both dates in its record entry. [24]
-
Towser's total was extrapolated from several days of observation, not counted across her lifetime. GWR's account says more than three mice a day, not five. [12]
-
Towser left a mark beyond the record book: her paw prints appear on Fairlie's Light Highland Liqueur bottles, according to GWR's account. [12]
-
Her successor Amber had a very different record. The Courier reports that she never killed a mouse; her single catch was released alive. [26]
-
Passport arrived at Glen Keith in 1993 as a stowaway in a cask shipment from Kentucky, according to the Press and Journal's account. [27]
-
Lindores Abbey's cats Vesper and Friar John Claw take their names from an abbey hymn and a monk associated with early whisky making. [27]
Malting floors, names and space
-
In 2020, the Press and Journal named The Balvenie and Highland Park among the few distilleries still turning barley on traditional malting floors. [27]
-
Glenturret's own account identifies a 1763 rental document naming “Thurot Distillery” as its earliest record. This is the producer's account, rather than an independently settled oldest claim. [28]
-
The same producer history says the site was called The Hosh Distillery from 1814. The Glenturret name followed in 1873. [28]
-
Ardbeg says it sent new make spirit, the spirit before maturation, and oak to the International Space Station in October 2011, orbiting for almost three years. [25]
-
According to Ardbeg's published experiment account, the space samples differed from Islay controls in three of four analyses. This is a producer-reported finding. [25]
-
The Scotch Whisky Experience reports that the Diageo Claive Vidiz collection in Edinburgh comprises 3,384 bottles. It dates the oldest, a James Buchanan's, to 1897 to 1900. [29]
-
The Scotch Whisky Experience calculates that 8,223 standard 700 ml bottles laid end to end would span the Forth Bridge. That is its illustrative calculation. [29]
Whisky by the numbers
-
Kentucky held 16.1 million barrels of ageing bourbon on 1 January 2025. The Kentucky Distillers' Association reported 17.1 million barrels of spirits overall. [30]
-
The Scotch Whisky Association expresses 2025 exports as 43 bottles shipped every second, using equivalent 700 ml bottles at 40% ABV. These are standardised equivalents. [31]
-
The association's other export comparison is geographical: laid end to end, those bottles would stretch about 467,000 kilometres, more than 11 times around the Earth. [31]
A signature and a flag
-
Lincoln the barkeeper is Disputed. The surviving document is a bond for a New Salem tavern licence, signed with William F. Berry and Bowling Green on 6 March 1833. Popular claims that Lincoln held a liquor licence in his own name rely on accounts not opened for this article; the bond alone does not establish that claim. [32]
-
In 1984, Canada planted a flag and left Canadian whisky on Hans Island. Denmark's minister for Greenland later left a Danish flag and aquavit. [33]
Story box: flags and bottles
Story title: Whisky on Hans Island.
Founding story: Canada left whisky and a flag in 1984. [33]
Turning point: Global News reported an agreement to divide the island, due to be signed on 14 June 2022. [33]
Documented record: The report describes Canadian whisky and Danish aquavit accompanying national flags. [33]
Claim: The Hans Island dispute included flag and bottle exchanges.
Verdict: Documented.
What the record shows: The reported actions involved flags and bottles, not armed conflict. [33]
Evidence against or gap: None found for the bottle exchanges.
Earliest known source: Not established from the sources checked. Global News reported the exchanges on 14 June 2022. [33]
